Autumn is here, and the run-up to the busiest part of the year is already gathering pace.
For Class 1 HGV drivers across Liverpool, Manchester, the Wirral, Cheshire and Lancashire, that usually means more options. Retailers need extra trunking capacity. Parcel networks start planning for higher volumes. Supermarket and general haulage operations need reliable cover across days, nights and weekends.
If you’re looking for class 1 driver jobs this autumn, it’s a good time to get organised and get registered.
At Adapt Logistics, we connect experienced Class 1 and Class 2 drivers with temporary, ongoing and ad-hoc work across the North West. Here’s what’s shifting in the market, and how you can get the right work faster.
What’s happening in the Class 1 jobs market this autumn?
The autumn peak doesn’t arrive all at once. Demand tends to build from September, then increase through October and into Black Friday and Christmas.
Job-board listings are already showing Class 1 opportunities across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire. Current roles include:
- Trunking between depots
- Supermarket and store deliveries
- Parcel and distribution work
- General haulage
- Fridge and temperature-controlled transport
- Night driving
- Weekend cover
- 4-on, 4-off shift patterns
- Short-term and ongoing agency assignments
You can see the wider picture through current HGV vacancies in North West England on Reed and Class 1 roles around Manchester on Totaljobs.
The main change is that operators are looking for availability and reliability now, rather than waiting until the busiest weeks arrive. Getting registered early can put you in a stronger position when new shifts are released at short notice.
More demand for nights, weekends and flexible cover
Peak season creates pressure at every stage of the transport operation.
Warehouses may run extended hours. Retail deliveries need to reach stores before opening. Parcel networks need extra trunking overnight. That means operators often need drivers who can work outside the traditional Monday-to-Friday, 9-to-5 pattern.
You may see more opportunities for:
- Night trunking
- Early morning starts
- Weekend-only work
- Extended shifts
- Holiday cover
- Short-notice bookings
- Regular work across several weeks
- Ongoing contracts after the peak
That doesn’t mean you need to say yes to everything. It does mean it’s worth being clear about what you can do.
If you’re available for nights or weekends, tell your recruitment consultant. If you prefer daytime store deliveries, say so. The more we understand about your preferences, the easier it is to match you with work that suits your routine.
What are operators looking for?
Every client has slightly different requirements. A driver who’s ideal for overnight trunking may not be the right fit for a busy multi-drop operation, and that’s fine.
For most Class 1 assignments, operators are looking for:
A valid Class 1 licence
You’ll need a valid C+E licence, along with the relevant Driver CPC and digital tachograph card.
Your licence details will be checked as part of the onboarding process. This is an important step for you, the client and everyone sharing the road.
Recent commercial experience
Many Class 1 roles ask for at least six to 12 months of recent commercial driving experience. Some jobs may require experience in a particular type of work, such as:
- Trunking
- Store deliveries
- Multi-drop
- Curtainsider work
- Fridge work
- Container transport
- Tail-lift deliveries
If you’re newly qualified, there may still be opportunities. Requirements vary between clients, so it’s always worth discussing your experience and licence history with us.
Reliability
This one matters more than ever during peak season.
When a driver doesn’t arrive, a vehicle can sit empty, a delivery window can be missed and the whole rota can feel the impact. Operators want drivers who turn up on time, communicate clearly and take pride in doing the job properly.
A clean, professional approach can also lead to more regular work.
Flexibility
You don’t have to be available every day. But if you can offer some flexibility, you may have access to a wider range of shifts.
Let us know if you can work:
- Different start times
- Nights
- Weekends
- Ad-hoc shifts
- Longer runs
- Short-term cover
- Ongoing assignments

How to get Class 1 driver jobs quickly
The fastest way to find suitable work is to make sure your details are ready before the phone rings.
1. Get your documents together
Have your key information close to hand, including:
- Driving licence details
- Driver CPC information
- Digital tachograph card details
- Proof of identity
- Right-to-work documents
- Recent employment history
- Details of your Class 1 experience
- References, where required
This can help prevent delays during onboarding.
At Adapt Logistics, we focus on getting compliance completed properly, so you’re ready to be considered for suitable work.
2. Be honest about your experience
Tell us what you’ve actually done.
If you’ve driven artics on trunking work but haven’t done multi-drop, say so. If you’re confident with night work but prefer not to do store deliveries, let us know.
Clear information helps us match you accurately. It also means you know what to expect before accepting a shift.
3. Register before you urgently need work
Waiting until you need a shift tomorrow can limit your options.
Registering in advance means we can understand your availability, complete the necessary checks and contact you when suitable work comes in.
You can find out more through our driver recruitment page or view available roles on our current temporary jobs page.
4. Keep your phone nearby
Peak-season work can move quickly. A shift may become available because of sickness, a vehicle change, increased volume or a last-minute rota gap.
If you’re actively looking, respond promptly to calls and messages. Even if one job isn’t right for you, let us know your current availability so we can look at the next option.
5. Ask the right questions
Before accepting a shift, make sure you understand:
- The start time
- The location
- The expected finish time
- The type of work
- The vehicle and trailer type
- The number of drops
- The pay rate
- The payment schedule
- Any site-specific requirements
- Whether there’s an induction
Good job information helps you make the right decision. We aim to provide clear details before you accept a shift.
