Grab a brew and pull up a chair. If you’ve been out on the M6 or the M62 lately, you’ll know that July 2026 is turning out to be a scorcher. While we all love a bit of sun, for those of us in the logistics game, the heat brings its own set of challenges: especially when it comes to fuel.

With the sun beating down on the tarmac from Liverpool to Manchester and up through Preston, your truck is working harder than ever. At Adapt Logistics, we’re all about making life easier for our drivers. Whether you’re working one of our hgv driver jobs or you're a transport manager trying to keep overheads down, saving fuel is the name of the game this summer.

High temperatures can play havoc with your fuel efficiency, but with a few clever tweaks to your routine, you can keep those costs in check and your engine running sweet. Here’s our guide to keeping your cool and saving diesel this summer.

1. Keep it Steady: The Power of Smoothness

We all know the feeling. You’re behind on your drop, the traffic around the Haydock Island is a nightmare, and you just want to get moving. But heavy-footed driving is the quickest way to drain your tank.

The "golden rule" of fuel-saving is to keep the vehicle rolling. Every time you come to a dead stop, it takes a massive amount of energy (and fuel) to get those tons of metal moving again. Anticipation is your best friend. If you see a red light or a queue forming ahead on the M56, ease off early. Use your engine braking and try to time it so you’re still rolling when the traffic moves.

Cruise control is a lifesaver on the long stretches of the M6, helping you maintain a constant, efficient speed. Just remember to flick it off on the hillier sections around the Pennines: cruise control can sometimes over-fuel when trying to maintain speed on a climb.

2. Tyre Pressures: Don't Let the Heat Deflate Your Efforts

In the North West heat, your tyres are under a lot of stress. As the road temperature rises, so does the pressure inside your tyres. However, the real danger is starting your shift with under-inflated tyres.

Under-inflated tyres have a higher "rolling resistance," meaning your engine has to work significantly harder just to turn the wheels. Even being 15% under-inflated can hike your fuel consumption by 3%. In a week of long-haul shifts, that’s a lot of money literally going up in smoke.

Make it a habit to check your pressures when the tyres are cold: usually first thing in the morning before you leave the yard. Keeping them at the manufacturer’s recommended level is one of the simplest ways to stay efficient and, more importantly, safe.

3. The Great Air Con Debate: Windows vs. Climate Control

When the cab feels like a sauna, the first instinct is to blast the air con. But did you know that your A/C can increase fuel consumption by up to 10%?

Here’s the Adapt Logistics pro-tip: it’s all about your speed. If you’re crawling through Manchester city centre or doing multi-drop work at lower speeds, crack the windows open. The drag is minimal at low speeds, and the fresh air will cool the cab down without taxing the engine.

Once you hit the motorway and get up to 50mph or more, close the windows and turn on the A/C. At high speeds, open windows create "wind drag" that actually uses more fuel than the air conditioning unit does. Try to set the temperature to a comfortable level rather than the "Arctic" setting: your fuel gauge will thank you.

4. Route Planning: Avoiding the Peak Heat and Traffic

As a leading transport agency North West, we see how much time and fuel is wasted in summer congestion. Between tourist traffic heading to the Lake District and the usual commuter chaos, the roads can get clogged fast.

Planning your route isn't just about finding the shortest path; it’s about finding the most efficient one. If you can, time your journeys for the cooler early mornings or late evenings. Not only is the air cooler: meaning your engine and A/C don’t have to work as hard: but the roads are generally clearer.

Avoid known summer hotspots where you can. If the M6 is looking like a car park near Blackpool, is there a dual carriageway alternative? Every minute spent idling in a queue is fuel wasted.

5. Minimise Idling (Seriously!)

We’ve all been there: waiting at a loading bay, keeping the engine running so the air con stays on. It’s tempting, but idling is a massive fuel killer. An HGV can burn through a significant amount of diesel just sitting still.

If you’re going to be stationary for more than a couple of minutes, turn the engine off. If you need to keep the cab cool during a break, try to find some shade to park in. Modern cabs are well-insulated, and if you vent the hot air out before you stop, it’ll stay comfortable for longer.

6. Aerodynamics and Maintenance

It might not seem like much, but things like loose curtain straps or an uncovered trailer can create "turbulent air" that drags on the truck. Ensuring your load is secured tightly and any aerodynamic kits are properly adjusted can make a noticeable difference over a long shift.

Regular maintenance is also key. A clogged air filter or a slightly misaligned wheel makes your truck work harder. At Adapt Logistics, we pride ourselves on working with clients who keep their fleets in top-notch condition, ensuring our drivers have the best tools for the job.
