Summer Fuel-Saving Tips for HGV Drivers in the North West

Sun’s out, windows down (well, maybe not if you want to save fuel: we’ll get to that!), and the North West is looking brilliant. But if you’re behind the wheel of a Class 1 or Class 2 rig, you know that summer brings its own set of challenges. Between the bank holiday traffic on the M6 and the soaring temperatures, your fuel gauge can start dropping faster than a lead weight.

At Adapt Logistics, we know that every penny counts. Whether you’re working one of our hgv driver jobs or you’re a fleet manager looking to trim the fat, fuel efficiency is the name of the game. We’ve pulled together a few handy tips to help you keep more of your hard-earned cash in your pocket this summer.

So, grab a brew, take five, and let’s talk about how to make that tank go further.

1. Stop the Idling Habit

We’ve all been there. You’re waiting at a bay in Haydock or stuck in a queue near the Trafford Centre, and it’s tempting to just leave the engine ticking over. But idling is basically just burning money for no reason.

Modern engines don’t need to "warm up" like the old ones did, and they certainly don’t benefit from sitting there doing nothing. If you’re going to be stationary for more than a minute or two, turn it off. It’s better for the engine, better for the environment, and much better for the fuel card.

If your cab is getting a bit like a greenhouse, try to find some shade or use auxiliary power if your truck has it. Every minute you spend idling is fuel that could have been used to get you further down the road. As a leading transport agency North West, we always remind our drivers that small habits lead to big savings over a long shift.

2. Check Your Tyres (Properly!)

It sounds like a basic one, doesn't it? But you’d be surprised how many drivers overlook it. When the weather heats up, the air in your tyres expands, but that doesn't mean you can skip the checks. Under-inflated tyres create more "rolling resistance." Essentially, your engine has to work harder just to push the truck along the road.

Make it a habit to check your pressures when the tyres are cold. If you’re running even slightly low, you’re dragging your fuel economy down. While you’re at it, keep an eye on your alignment. If your tyres are wearing unevenly, your truck is fighting against itself, which is a massive fuel drain. 3. The Magic of Speed Control

We get it. You’ve got a schedule to keep and the M62 is actually moving for once. It’s tempting to push right up to the limiter. But here’s the reality: dropping your speed just a tiny bit can make a massive difference.

If you knock your speed down from 56 mph to 50 mph, you can cut your fuel consumption by up to 20%. Over a full week of trunking across the North West, that’s a huge chunk of change. You’ll probably find that you arrive at your destination only a few minutes later, but you’ll be much more relaxed and a lot richer.

4. Using Cruise Control the Right Way

Cruise control is a lifesaver on long, flat stretches of the M6. It keeps your speed steady and prevents that "foot-heavy" acceleration that gulps fuel. However, don’t just set it and forget it.

When you hit the hilly bits: like the climbs up through Lancashire or towards the Pennines: cruise control can actually be your enemy. It’ll try to maintain your set speed by dumping fuel into the engine to power up the hill. Instead, switch it off, let your speed drop slightly as you climb, and then use the truck’s momentum on the way down. It’s all about working with the road, not against it.

5. Route Planning: Avoid the Bottlenecks

The North West is famous for its "interesting" traffic. Whether it’s roadworks on the M60 or the summer rush heading towards Blackpool and the Lakes, being stuck in stop-start traffic is a fuel killer.

Before you set off, have a quick look at your route. Can you avoid the peak-time madness around Manchester and Liverpool? Sometimes taking a slightly longer route that keeps you moving is actually more fuel-efficient than sitting in a jam for forty minutes. We always encourage the drivers we work with through our logistics recruitment services to be proactive with their planning. A little bit of prep saves a lot of stress.

6. Air Con vs. Windows: The Great Debate

It’s boiling in the cab. Do you crack the windows or blast the A/C?

Here’s the rule of thumb: if you’re crawling through town at low speeds, open the windows. The drag doesn't matter much when you're doing 20 mph. But once you hit the dual carriageway or the motorway, close them up. Open windows at high speeds turn your truck into a giant wind-brake, creating massive drag.

In that case, use the air con, but be smart about it. Get the cab down to a comfortable temperature, then turn it down or off. You don't need to be sitting in a freezer! Every time that A/C compressor kicks in, it’s drawing power from the engine.

7. Keep it Clean and Maintained

A well-maintained truck is a thirsty truck’s nightmare. Simple things like a dirty air filter can starve your engine of oxygen, making it burn more fuel to compensate.

Check your filters regularly, especially in the summer when there's more dust and pollen in the air. Also, keep an eye out for any leaks. A tiny drip of fuel might not look like much, but over hundreds of miles, it adds up. If you're a driver who takes pride in your rig, you're exactly the kind of person we want to talk to. Why not join our team today?

Wrapping it Up

Saving fuel isn't about one big change; it’s about all these little things adding up. By being a bit more mindful of how you drive and look after your vehicle, you can make your shifts more profitable and less stressful.

The North West is a busy place to work, but with the right approach, you can master the roads and keep your costs down. Whether you're heading out from Liverpool docks or navigating the industrial estates of Warrington, stay safe and keep it efficient.
