Grab a brew and take a load off for five minutes. We’re deep into the July peak now, and if you’ve been out on the roads across Liverpool, Manchester, or the Wirral lately, you’ll know it’s getting busy. Between the summer sun, the school holiday traffic, and the constant demand for deliveries, things are moving fast.
At Adapt Logistics, we’ve been keeping a close eye on how the North West is holding up. Whether you're behind the wheel of a Class 1 or managing a whole fleet, this time of year brings its own set of challenges.
In today’s update, we’re looking at staying sharp in the heat, navigating the latest motorway closures, and why more businesses are using logistics recruitment to secure their best drivers permanently before the autumn rush.
1. Keeping Your Cool: Driver Wellbeing in the Summer Heat
It’s easy to forget just how draining a hot cab can be. Even with the AC blasting, long hours in the sun take a toll on your body and your focus. If you’re out there doing multi-drop or long-haul trunking, staying on top of your health isn't just about feeling good: it’s about safety.
Hydration is King
You’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it again: drink more water. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated. Aim for at least 2–3 litres a day. Try to avoid relying solely on energy drinks; the sugar crash can hit you harder than the caffeine lift. A steady supply of water or diluted juice keeps your concentration levels consistent.
Managing Fatigue
Heat makes you tired. It’s a physical fact. If you’re feeling that mid-afternoon slump, don’t just power through. Find a shaded spot, get out of the cab, and stretch your legs. Even a 10-minute break in the fresh air can reset your brain.
Sleeping on the Road
For our night owls and those sleeping in the cab, the July sun is your biggest enemy. If you're parking up for a rest during the day:
- Invest in blackout blinds: They don’t just block light; they help keep the heat out.
- Use a portable fan: Keeping the air moving makes a massive difference to sleep quality.
- Time your meals: Avoid heavy, hot meals right before you try to sleep. Stick to something light so your body isn't working overtime to digest while you're trying to cool down.

2. Roadworks Update: The M6/M62/M56 Corridor
The North West wouldn’t be the North West without a few orange cones, would it? We’ve got some significant works happening right now that might add a bit of time to your ETAs. Here’s the lowdown for the rest of July 2026:
- M6 Northbound (J33–J34): Resurfacing near Lancaster is ongoing. Expect full overnight closures on the northbound side until the 18th of July. You’ll be diverted via the A6, so factor in an extra 20 minutes if you’re heading towards Cumbria.
- M62 (J22–J24): If you’re crossing the Pennines towards Huddersfield, watch out for full overnight closures in both directions at Ainley Top. These start on July 15th and will run through into early August. It’s a major one, so check your route before you set off.
- M56 (J1–J3): The Sharston bypass maintenance is still in full swing. We’re seeing regular eastbound closures between 9 PM and 5 AM (stretching to 7 AM on weekends).
- M56 (J14–J15): New resurfacing works near Cheshire (Hapsford/Stoak) are kicking off on July 13th. They’re alternating which side they close, but expect some lane restrictions and overnight diversions for the rest of the month.
Staying ahead of these closures is half the battle. If you're looking for hgv driver jobs with routes that suit your schedule, we always recommend checking the latest live feeds before you start your shift.

3. Securing Talent: Why Temp-to-Perm is Winning
For the transport managers out there, we know the struggle. The "Autumn Rush" might feel months away, but in the logistics world, it’s just around the corner. We’ve noticed a big trend this summer: businesses are using temp-to-perm arrangements to lock in the best talent early.
As a leading transport agency North West, we’ve seen why this works:
The "Try Before You Buy" Approach
A CV only tells you so much. By bringing a driver in on a temporary basis first, you get to see how they handle your specific routes, how they treat the gear, and how they fit in with your team. It removes the risk of a bad hire.
Building Loyalty
Drivers love stability. When we place someone in a temp-to-perm role, they aren't just "covering a shift": they’re auditioning for a home. We find that drivers in these roles are often more engaged and committed because they can see a clear path to a permanent contract.
Beating the Peak Shortage
Wait until October to start your permanent recruitment, and you’ll be fighting every other firm in the country for the same pool of drivers. Doing it now, while things are busy but manageable, means you have your core team fully settled and trained before the Christmas madness begins.

We’ve Got Your Back
Whether you’re a driver looking for your next long-term home or a manager trying to fill a gap in the rota, we’re here to help. We specialise in connecting the right people with the right roles across the North West, from multi-drop Class 2 work in Liverpool to heavy-haul Class 1 trunking out of Manchester.
