Summer Fuel-Saving Tips for HGV Drivers in the North West

Summer is finally here in the North West, and while we’re all enjoying the sunshine on the docks at Liverpool or the rare clear views across the Pennines, the heat brings its own set of challenges for those of us behind the wheel. If you’re out on the M6 or navigating the M60 ring road, you’ll know that the warmer weather doesn't just mean reaching for the suncream: it also means your rig is working harder, and your fuel tank might be draining a little faster than you’d like.

At Adapt Logistics, we know that every penny counts. Whether you’re a fleet manager looking to keep overheads down or a driver on one of our hgv driver jobs trying to be as efficient as possible, saving fuel is the name of the game. We’ve put together a few handy tips to help you keep more of that diesel in the tank while you’re traversing our neck of the woods this summer.

So, grab a brew, take five, and let’s look at how you can make your miles go further.

1. Master the 'Golden Foot'

We all know the North West isn’t exactly a straight, flat line. Between the climbs on the M62 and the constant stop-start around the Trafford Centre, your right foot is your biggest tool for fuel efficiency.

The biggest fuel killer? Unnecessary acceleration. Every time you have to mash the pedal to get back up to speed after heavy braking, you’re essentially pouring fuel down the drain. In the summer, traffic can be even more unpredictable with holidaymakers heading to Blackpool or the Lakes.

Try to read the road at least ten vehicles ahead. If you see brake lights appearing in the distance near Simister Island, ease off early. Letting the truck’s momentum carry you rather than staying on the gas until the last second makes a massive difference. Smooth is fast, and smooth is definitely cheaper.

2. The Great Air-Con Debate

It’s 25 degrees in Warrington (miracles do happen!), and the cab is starting to feel like an oven. What do you do?

There’s always a bit of a debate about whether it's better to crack the windows or blast the air conditioning. Here’s the rule of thumb we recommend:

  • Low Speeds (Urban/City): If you’re doing multi-drop work around Manchester city centre or Liverpool’s city streets, open the windows. At lower speeds, the aerodynamic drag caused by open windows is minimal, and it’s much more efficient than running the air-con pump.
  • High Speeds (Motorway): Once you hit the M6 or the M56, close those windows. At 56mph, the "drag" from open windows turns your truck into a giant parachute, which kills your fuel economy. This is where the air-con is actually the more efficient choice. Just don't set it to "Arctic Circle" : keeping it at a comfortable 19 or 20 degrees is plenty.

3. Tyred of High Fuel Costs?

The heat has a funny way of messing with physics. As the tarmac heats up on the North West’s roads, so do your tyres. If your pressures are even slightly off, your rolling resistance goes through the roof.

Running on under-inflated tyres is like trying to cycle through sand. It’s hard work for the engine and even harder on your fuel card. We recommend checking your pressures at least once a week during the summer months. Even being 10 psi down can drop your efficiency by a couple of percent. Over a long shift across the North West, that adds up to a lot of wasted diesel.

While you're at it, give the treads a quick look. If the rubber is wearing unevenly, it could mean your alignment is out, which is another hidden fuel thief.

4. Navigating the North West Hotspots

Route planning is one of the best ways a transport agency North West like ours helps keep things moving. In summer, the usual hotspots get even busier.

If you’re heading north on a Friday afternoon, you know the M6 through Preston is going to be a nightmare with everyone heading to the Lake District. Likewise, the M56 towards North Wales becomes a car park.

If your schedule allows it, try to plan your "heavy" miles : those long stretches where you're at full weight : for times when the traffic is lighter. Avoiding a thirty-minute crawl in first and second gear will save you more fuel than almost anything else on this list. Use your sat-nav’s live traffic features to skirt around the worst of the congestion. Sometimes taking the "long way" round via a quieter A-road can actually use less fuel than sitting in a jam on the M60.

5. Cut the Idling

We get it: when you’re waiting at a depot in Runcorn or stuck at a loading bay in Haydock, it’s tempting to keep the engine running just to keep the cab cool or the radio going. But idling is 100% waste.

Modern HGV engines are incredibly efficient when they're moving, but they still burn a significant amount of fuel just sitting there. If you know you’re going to be stationary for more than three minutes, flick the engine off. It’s better for the environment, better for the engine, and much better for the fuel budget.

6. Aerodynamics Aren't Just for Racing Cars

You might not be driving a Formula 1 car, but aerodynamics still matter when you’re hauling 44 tonnes. In the summer, make sure your deflectors are adjusted correctly for the trailer you’re pulling.

If you’ve got a gap between the cab and the trailer that’s too wide, you’re creating a pocket of "dirty air" that’s pulling you backward. A quick adjustment can save you a surprising amount of fuel over a week of long-haul shifts. Also, keep those curtains tight! Flapping curtains on a curtain-sider are basically tiny sails catching the wind: and not in a good way.

Why Support Matters

At Adapt Logistics, we’re more than just a logistics recruitment firm. We’re part of the North West transport community. We know that being an HGV driver is a tough gig, especially when the sun is beating down and the traffic is heavy.

That’s why we offer 24/7 support to all our drivers. Whether you’re on a long-term contract or just covering an ad-hoc shift, we’ve got your back. We believe that a well-supported driver is a more efficient driver. When you’re not stressed about your next drop or your pay (which we handle weekly, by the way), you can focus on the road and on driving at your best.

Wrapping It Up

Saving fuel this summer isn’t about one big change; it’s about all the little things adding up. A bit of smooth driving on the M62, checking your tyres before you leave the yard in Warrington, and knowing when to use the air-con can make a massive difference to your bottom line.

The North West is a great place to work, and with the right approach, you can keep your summer shifts profitable and stress-free.
